Apple has never gone big on gaming and macOS has rarely been the focus of game-related news. The company stopped updating the old graphics engine OpenGL a long time ago. Although Metal is really powerful, Apple has not bothered to make sure that the framework has all the features for games that are available in competing frameworks such as Vulkan and Direct3d.

If you want to do competitive gaming macs are not for you at least not for now. Windows computers are still the way to go. But if you want to buy mac but still play some games M1 Macs will provide you the best gaming experience.

Fortnite

Apple’s new M1 chip has been giving competing Intel chips a run for their money in CPU performance and it does not stop there. Tests reveal that the new Apple Silicon can also give many graphics cards a tough time as well. The latest graphics test by Tally Ho Tech reveals that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and AMD Radeon RX 560 is easily outperformed by the M1 chipset. This could take gaming on a Mac to a whole different level.

On full 4K resolution, the M1 Mac supported 70 to 150 fps at low setting for Fortnite.

On full 4K resolution, the M1 Mac you get almost 100 fps of gaming experience at medium setting for Fortnite.

On full 4K resolution, the M1 Mac you get about 30 to 40fps of gaming experience at High setting for Fortnite.

On full 4K resolution, the M1 Mac you get about 30 to 40fps of gaming experience at Epic setting for Fortnite.

Bringing down the resolution to 2K, or full HD the computer will support even better and stable performance.

CSGO

On full 4K resolution, the M1 Mac you get about 30 to 40fps of gaming experience at medium setting.

On lowering down the resolution to full HD the it will give you around 60 to 70 fps at medium setting.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider, one of the most intense games, did not perform as well as Fortnite in full 4K resolution. Approximately 13 to 15 fps were supported which made the game unplayable. However, when the resolution was set to 1440p (2K), the machine gave 27 to 30 fps which made the game playable. And at full HD resolution, it gave around 35 to 40fps.

Minecraft

At max setting, you will get around 80 to 100 fps on Minecraft. where Graphics is set at Fancy, Smooth Lightning at maximum, Render distance is 12 chunks, Max Frame rate is set to unlimited, Clouds are set to fancy, and Particles All.

.
When the setting is lowered down to the lowest setting the you will get around 120 to 150 fps. where Graphics is set at Fast, Smooth Lightning Off, Render distance is 2 chunks, Max Frame rate is set to unlimited, Clouds are set to Crosshair, and Particles Minimal.

Bottom Line

The Apple Silicon M1 Macs offer some seriously impressive performance across a variety of workflows. While gaming still isn’t necessarily a strong suit for macOS, the custom M1 SoC definitely brings improvements to offer a solid-enough experience for some titles, and through the lens of Apple’s entry-notebooks even a surprisingly good one. It is not the best device for gaming but most of the games are still not optimized for apple silicon so the performance we are getting at the early stage is really promising for mac gaming.
