Apple has two kinds of laptops on offer: the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. Within those two categories, there are two versions of the MacBook Air, four 13in MacBook Pro models, and two 16in MacBook Pro.

Debating MacBook Air vs Pro is surprisingly complicated, as the two have gotten more and more similar. The entire line of modern MacBooks has become more appealing, as Apple finally replaced its 'Butterfly'-switch keyboards for more reliable keys. So, it's a great time for a multi-round face-off to see how these laptops stack up, to show how they differ and help you decide which model is best for you.

MacBook Air 2020

If you want the cheapest MacBook to buy-in 2020 this the model you should go for.
The new MacBook Air 2020 doesn’t look much different than its predecessor, but it packs a bunch of welcome upgrades that make Apple’s new notebook a very tempting option for those looking to buy a new laptop.

With the 2020 MacBook Air, Apple has delivered the perfect laptop for everyday use: checking email, writing, watching videos, creating presentations, listening to music, etc. MacBook Air is lightweight, sturdy, affordable, relatively powerful, has great battery life, and a good display. It’s just the near-perfect combination of all the laptop features out there.  The Butterfly keyboard is gone, leading to an improved and more reliable typing experience. This is the Mac laptop most people should buy.

The latest model starts with a 10th gen Intel Core i3 CPU, and you can get up to a quad-core Core i7 chip on the Air. The other major boost comes on the graphics front, thanks to Intel Iris Plus Graphics; this should allow for swifter video editing and better gameplay.

The base model now starts at just $999 and $899 for students. For that price, you now also get 256 GB of storage — double the 128 GB amount that MacBook Air laptops always used to have. The Air offers up to 2TB max, up from a 1TB max on the previous model.

If you are want to use your MacBook for more demanding tasks then you should consider the new MacBook Pro 13 inch.

MacBook Pro 2020 13 inch

If you are want to use your MacBook for more demanding tasks then you should consider the new MacBook Pro 13 inch.
There are essentially 2 versions of the new Macbook Pro 13 inch

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (8th Gen Intel Processors)
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch(10th Gen Intel Processors)

The chips used 8th generation on the bottom two models and 10th generation chips on the top two versions - there are four standard versions of the 13-inch MacBook Pro now. You can also configure up to 10th generation Core i7 at 2.3GHz with maximum Turbo Boost speeds lof 4.1Ghz. The MacBook Pro 13-inch is available in Silver or Space Gray.

While the new MacBook Air 2020 all comes with the new intel 10th Gen processors so you may think that the MackBook Air base varient may be faster than the MackBook Pro 13 inch base varient right, but its not the case.

MacBook Pros have faster U-series Intel processors, while the MacBook Air has a slower Y-series processor that is optimized for everyday tasks and battery life. The Pro will probably be better at handling intensive computing tasks, such as video editing or music production. This is both due to higher CPU clock and better thermal handling.

Both Air and Pro have Apple's Retina display, with a 2,560x1,600 pixel resolution and True Tone tech. The only difference is Wide color (P3) support on the Pro and the brightness of the displays MacBook Air has a 400 nits display while the MacBook Pro has a maxes out at 500 nits.

MacBook Air has physical function keys, while the Pro replaces those with the Touch Bar. Whether you need or want it is a personal preference; for me, the Touch Bar is occasionally handy but in no way essential.

MacBook Pro 16 inch

If you want the most powerful MacBook that apple has to offer this is the MacBook you should go for, an absolute powerhouse that, in all honesty, is overkill for most people, this laptop is for serious creative pros with more demanding needs, like coders, video editors and game developers.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is basically a desktop replacement. If you're thinking of getting an iMac but want to carry it around sometimes, or if you definitely need a discrete GPU, then splurge on the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

There are two version of the MacBook Pro 16 inch 6-core Core i7 processor or an 8-core Core i9 CPU.

It has up to an 8-core Core i9 processor, up to 64GB of RAM and up to 8TB of storage.

The 16-inch 60Hz IPS display comes in at 3,072 x 1,920 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:10. The panel covers the P3 color gamut and has a 500nit peak brightness.

True pros will appreciate the ability to change the refresh rate on the display. This is important for editors who want the refresh rate to match the frame rate of their content.

The speakers on the new MacBook Pro are definitely another impressive thing about this new laptop. Not only are they loud, but they’re also very clear, even at their loudest. This system offers beefier bass that’s half an octave deeper, thanks to force cancelling woofers that also minimize vibrations even when you max out the volume.

The biggest laptop you can legally include in a laptop is 100-watt-hours. And that's exactly what you get with the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple says you should expect up to 11 hours of web surfing time, which would be pretty impressive for a 16-inch laptop.

Bottom Line

The new MacBook Air takes this face-off. If most of your work isn't very processor intensive, and you don't care about the Touch Bar or faster charging, the Air is a better deal for most users. The MacBook Air vs Pro debate is closer than ever, with both laptops becoming more equal, which each winning in different ways.

But if you can wait then it is rumoured that on 27 October Apple may launch their new Silicon MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
