Apple announced the iPhone 13 lineup during its 2021 September event. There are four models the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, with camera improvements, display changes, and a better A15 processor. Many of the new features highlighted focused on photography and video.

iPhone 13 Design and Display

The iPhone 13 features a flat-edge design and has the Ceramic Shield glass we saw on the iPhone 12 series. It's also IP68 dust and water-resistant. The iPhone 13 keeps a similar design to last year’s iPhone 12 series with the same squared-off edges and glossy frame.

The infamous notch which houses the Face ID technology, the front-facing camera, and earpiece has now shrunk by 20%. This is the first time the notch has changed since it was introduced on the iPhone X in 2017. This will allow for more screen real estate along the top edge of the phone.

New for the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 is the diagonal camera lens layout, It helps the two regular iPhone 13s stand out from their predecessors a bit.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are slightly thicker than last year's models though, at 7.65mm compared to 7.4mm for their predecessors.

As for the display, the iPhone 13 features a 6.1-inch 1170 x 2532 display while the iPhone 13 mini features a 5.4-inch 1080 x 2340 screen. They're both Super Retina XDR displays, which use Apple's own custom OLED technology.

Each phone still features a 60Hz screen refresh rate, which matches the rumors.

iPhone 13 models were hit or miss, with the hits coming for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Both are available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and Product Red.

iPhone 13 camera

The iPhone 13's camera block has a new design, with the lenses arranged diagonally for the first time, rather than vertically. Apple added major camera upgrades for the iPhone 13. The non-Pro models sport a new 12MP ultrawide sensor that lets in 47% more light. The 12MP main wide-angle camera has sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a feature previously limited to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This will help the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini shoot beautiful photos in many lighting conditions.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini still feature a pair of sensors, wide-angle and ultra-wide. The 12MP wide-angle is now the same larger sensor that we saw on the iPhone 12 Pro Max last year with an f/1.6 aperture, which itself offers a 47% boost to low-light photography. The ultra-wide is again 12MP as well, now with a slightly improved f/2.4 aperture. Both camera modules now support Night Mode and are capable of recording 4K60p video, as well as Dolby Vision HDR video.

You also get Photographic Styles with each of the new iPhones, which bring personal preferences to your photos in real-time rendering. This is more than a filter; it applies the right tweaks to different scenes to bring out the best photos possible.

All four iPhone 13 models feature Cinematic Mode, which offers professional-grade cinematography to your videos with Dolby Vision HDR. Cinematic Mode’s claim to fame is its ability to dynamically shift focus and follow the subject of your video. If the subject moves, so will the focus. If the person looks away, the focus will shift to where the subject is looking. Simply tap where you want to focus and then tap again to lock in the focus.

iPhone 13 Performance and Battery Life

New with the iPhone 13 is the A15 Bionic system-on-chip, Apple’s most advanced chip ever. It’s built on a 5nm process with six cores. Two of those are new high-powered cores, while the remaining four are more efficient than before. And with enhancements to the Neural Engine, the iPhone 13 has powerful machine learning applications such as iOS 15’s new Live Text feature and Siri’s on-device speech recognition.

Apple claims to have an up to 50% faster CPU and 30% faster GPU than the competition. It also includes a new 16-core Neural Engine that's capable of 15.8 trillion operations every second. All of these handsets are also 5G-compatible, as were the iPhone 12 series.

Apple claims that all four iPhone 13 models will offer improved battery life over their predecessors, which is great news given the dramatic step back that all but the iPhone 12 Pro Max took last year. Apple indicated that the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro should offer 1.5 hours more, while the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max will deliver an extra 2.5 hours.

You'll have the option of 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage in the iPhone 13 duo – Apple has finally got rid of its 64GB option for its flagship iPhones, and that means more storage in the cheapest variant.
